KAPIT: Hundreds of multiracial Kapit folk welcomed Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on Monday when he arrived here for a two-day visit in connection with the state-level Nuzul Al-Quran celebration.

Kapit Land and Survey superintendent Norlina Ra’ee greets Taib upon his arrival. Nanta is at left.

This was Taib’s first official visit here since his appointment as Head of State.

He arrived at Sri Baleh around 5.15pm.

Among those waiting to welcome him was Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, who said Kapit folk were happy to host state-level events.

“We’re equally happy to receive the high powered state leaders who are also here for the state celebration, especially with the Muslims here. We’re very happy for the harmonious environment that we’re living in, especially in the religious aspect assured by the Sarawak state government for religious freedom.

“Here in Sarawak, we live in harmony irrespective of religious background as according to the Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem, he has personally assured us of religious harmony and respecting each other,” said Nanta.

He added that Adenan had made it very clear to everyone that the state would uphold religious harmony and reject extremist views.
